Kapolcs

Pottery Workshop and Gallery

It is always worth visiting Kapolcs and not only during the Valley of Arts Festival…

You can explore the life of the village and its surroundings, folk trades and handicraft activities in a number of demonstration places.

The Pottery Workshop and Gallery has been operating in the centre of this friendly, enthusiastic village with a population of 470 since 1999. Éva Szurdi, the owner and creator of the workshop, combines the traditional artisan techniques and styles of famous potters of Kapolcs from the 19th century with the various elements of modern arts and crafts. The consumer goods, ornamental objects and stove tiles can be seen all year round and also purchased in small quantities.

Smithy Museum

For us, as a ‘nation that was born on a horseback’, the profession of a blacksmith has always been important in each and every Hungarian settlement since ancient times. Today you cannot really meet a representative of this profession, so enter the smithy and see how and with what these craftsmen worked!

Available to visitors: by pre-arrangement.

Village Mill Museum

In Kapolcs, you can come across old mill buildings everywhere, the majority of which – as listed buildings – tell stories about another traditional folk craft. More and more of them are renovated, with the Szaller Water Mill – also known as the Village Mill, which serves as a museum today – being a fine example of this. After the full renovation, it became one of Hungary’s most precious water mill museums: with its machines and grain processing equipment that are more than one hundred years old, it demonstrates the milling and processing of any grain, including wheat.

Available to visitors: by pre-registration.

Village House

The Village House intends to co-ordinate the cultural life of Kapolcs. Accordingly, you can see exhibitions here or educate yourself in the library which is available on working days to those wishing to read or undertake research on something. It is worth interrupting your time spent among the books and visiting the photo exhibition that shows us the past and present Kapolcs to us.
